Book Report 04/21/08

Gladwell, Malcom. The Tipping Point. New York. Back Bay Books/Little, Brown and Company: 2000.
I chose this book as i was looking through the New York Times best seller lists as I recently started looking for and reading books that have been on the list as most of those books are very interesting to read, it's written style and the content is strikingly similar to "Freakanomics" and it deals about how the world works differently than we thought just like "Freakanomics" and I think as soon as I found out, I got a deeper interest to keep reading the book.
As the book is similar to "Freakanomics", it doesn't necessarily have a plot in a sense that there are characters that develop in a setting in chronological order, but it gives various case-by-case, study on how there was a tipping point in each of these cases that made a certain item or subject become famous or recognizable. Examples of these were Hush Puppies, the t.v. shows "Sesame Street", and "Blue's Clues", and t.v. advertisements.
The Tipping Point had no character that was actually made, but the book as being in a different style of the current generation, it was a good book with no characters involved.
As I have read "Freakanomics" before, this book was highly enjoyable as it brought back the memories of how enjoyable "Freakanomics" were and "The Tipping Point" was just as good. Though it was very good I would recommend "Freakanomics" over "The Tipping Point", for reasons I'm not sure of.

I think that this book is really important to read as it can possibly have a life changing impact on the way people would view the world and become more aware of their actions, and I think that reading a book that gives various insight on how situations come with a miraculous result come to be helps people see the world's unexplainables in to an explainable one.
Malcom Gladwell is currently working as a staff writer for The New Yorker, and he has another #1 New York Times bestseller list with a title "Blink" and I'm hoping to read that book as well.

Clintons attacks do..nothing?

If everyone's been up to date with the campaign trails of the democrats, it has been a rough week for both Hilary and Obama indeed, but Hilary making what seems like an all-out, last ditch attacks at trying to sway superdelegates, it's failed miserably. Obama who have chosen some bad words on what he was trying to say, was attacked for it. Hilary on the other has lied to the public about bosnia, failed to fulfill her duties during her earlier days as senator/first lady with conflicts of interest with Bill, as well as being a hypocrit of various policies, she has resorted to the lowest forms of attack and has been seen through by the superdelegates. Even though the attacks with intentions cleary visible, the superdelegates still haven't decided as it is still a close race, and hopefully next weeks pennsylvania will help finish her off =D

Vocab Week (5?)

Vertigo, self-explanatory, i was thinking of topsy turvey tables, but ehh couldn't find one.

This one made me think about misdirection for a bit, since commercials tend to give a direction, but i think it is misdirecting because i think obama is the best candidate.

Last Words

Prompt: You only have a limited time left to live. You are somehow able to leave a message behind, to pass on some final thoughts, what would be your message?

As i'm counting the clock of my final days
all my memories seems to slowly fade away
Having lived a long life
there's so much advice that i don't have enough time to say
having finally realized how precious time is
I can say to live with no regrets
though it's been said over and over again its taken for granted
and even when it's not people can't or won't live life
But to live life with no regrets
make the best choices
whether or not there is a good or bad
make the best choices

Kanye West: Heard 'em Say

And I heard 'em say, nothin ever promised tomorrow today. From the Chi, like Tim its the Hard-a-way,So this is in the name of love, like Robert saysBefore you ask me to get a job today, can I at least get a raise on a minimum wage? And I know the government administered AIDS,So I guess we just pray like the minister say,Allah o Akbar and throw em some hot cars,Things we see on the screen are not ours,But these niggas from the hood so these dreams not far,Where im from, the dope boys is the rock stars,But they can't cop cars without seein' cop cars,I guess they want us all behind bars.I know it.

[Chorus (Adam Levine)]Uh, And I heard 'em say, nothin ever promised tomorrow today.(ooooooooo)And I heard 'em say, nothin ever promised tomorrow today.(Nothing's ever promised tomorrow today.)But we'll find a way(And nothing lasts forever but be honest babe, it hurts but it may be the only way)

[Kanye]They say people in your life are seasons,And anything that happen is for a reason,And niggas guns a clappin and keep to squeezin',And Gran (Grandma) keep prayin' and keep believin',And Jesus and one day that ya see him,Till they walk in his footsteps and try to be him,The devil is alive I feel him breathin',Claimin' money is the key so keep on dreamin',And put them lottery tickets just to tease us,My aunt Pam can't put those cigarettes down,Now my lil cousin smokin those cigarettes now,His job trying to claim that he too niggerish now,Is it cuz his skin blacker than licorice now?I can't figure it out...Im Stickin around....

[Chorus (Adam Levine)]Uh, And I heard 'em say, nothin ever promised tomorrow today.(ooooooooo)And I heard 'em say, nothin ever promised tomorrow today.(Nothing's ever promised tomorrow today.)But we'll find a way(And nothing lasts forever but be honest babe, it hurts but it may be the only way)(Cuz every worthless word we get more far away, and nothing's ever promised tomorrow today,And nothing lasts forever but be honest babe, it hurts but it may be the only way)

1. Kanye West’s “Heard Em Say” implies that we’re not that nation we’re perceived to be, he talks about a lot of the internal problems that the government ignores while America continued to help others.
2. We’ve always seen ourselves as an overall the best country in the world, but Kanye West say that a lot of Americans see it negatively as well

1. With America holding the oldest constitution in the world, I think that people always see us as a nation of freedom and equality
2. With the current decade having been run mostly by George W. Bush, and though the song was written very early at the time, the fact that government has ignored a lot of the internal problems that America has is shown in this song, and how Jay-Z knows his rights to not get taken advantage of.
3. So far not much has changed; the government is still ignoring the many problems with the slums and the ghettos with African American communities.

1. This song is Eminem’s perception as America viewed as no longer free but entangled by divided people and corrupt under President Bush
2. We have seen ourselves in this song as divided, no longer “united we stand”
3. So far the song has pointed out that attitude and it is still the same today, as the war continues and the people continue to hate Bush’s doctrine and his administration.

Since Bush came in to office we no longer see ourselves as the nation we have set out to be

Overall the country has viewed itself negatively for the past 8 years

The attitude has changed a little and the changes have always been leaning toward the negative side

Current Event 04/02/08

Following the news of the Democratic race, Senator Barack Obama still has a lead over Hilary Clinton in delegates, and so far Clinton's supporters and political analysts say that she must win the popular vote in pennsylvania. So far I'm really frustrated with the results of how it is not ending. Hilary Clinton though she is just as good as obama, her recent credibility lost due to her lie about a certain trip visit as first lady, isn't dropping out, hopefully Obama wins, but honestly i'd be happy with both of them as long as it is not Mccain becoming president
