Honors Book Report "Freakonomics"

Freakanomics Book Report

Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt, and Stephen J. Dubner, Published by William Morrow , April 12, 2005 in New York.
The reason I chose this book, is because though I’ve read it before, I read it again to refresh my memory in the exact details between economics and moral society. The book doesn’t have a setting as it is a book that explains what drives people to do anything in modern society, but the book’s description of where the events in history take place is placed in recent 1900’s to the recent millennium.
The book revolves around a lot of mathematics and statistics of past events in recent history where people with incentives will do anything to make money and how money is the driving force in today’s society. It talks from why drug dealers still live with their parents, to how sumo wrestlers are similar to the KKK in terms of financial management. It also talks about how honest people are based on the social pressures that are placed on individuals and how cheating come from the strength of the incentives, usually involving money in some way.
Freakonomics was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The book’s analysis of the data and facts that revolve around each scenario is very well thought out and lets the reader understand the countless information they present with their conclusions.

O.B. Pictures

I think the bottom picture with the video camera painted on the garbage can looks like a form of oppression. Because though there are more severe ways of oppressing someone, (no freedoms, forced actions from the government, etc.) I think that the picture resembling a constant surveilance on the public and take away privacy rights from individuals, and with that comes the power to oppress the people in a community whether it be a small city, or to an entire country. And i think that having that painted on a trash can, i think that the painter wanted it to "throw away privacy invasion."

MoPa Creative Writing Post

The night was cold but calm. The boy walked through the green grasslands, pondering what to do next. He sat down on top of a hill and gazed at the moon. It seemed to glow blue on this particular day. he watched the owls fly through the moonlight and their shadows cast upon the ground. He looked down the hill and saw the lake. He was drawn toward the lake and he couldn't wonder why. He got up and walked around the lake and got to the opposite sides through the banks. He looked through the lake. The lake was still enough to look through it like a mirror. He saw the entire night sky through the lake and saw the moon through the lake. But the moon glowed red and the stars were green. He stood in awe and he gazed closer and through the lake, he looked deeper and saw that a single tree was under the lake. The tree glowed a faint white. He stepped back and ran back to tell his parents what he had witnessed.

Avian Bird Flu, Possible Mutation

In China, a father and son contracted the avian bird flu and the father died soon after his son. Health officials are putting an emphasis on trying to find a mutation in the strain, since humans are already able to contract the disease, they are trying to make sure if the mutation will allow the virus strain to contract more easily between person to person, like the common cold, but with deadlier symptoms. China being the lead industry in poultry, was hit hardest when the avian bird flu pandemic hit their farms, and millions of birds have died and along with 27 human deaths

Would I save the Violinist/Star/Ross????

If i had a choice, i'd save the person, because if you think about it 9 months, through terribly inconvenient, isn't life threatening, and you can save him just by staying there and watching the t.v, playing video games, etc. You also get the excuse to not do any work for school or have any responsibilities except to make sure that they stay alive. Plus, in the end you can ask for money or benefits so that you get something out of it with the capitalistic idea in mind =D. And as for the ethical question of is one life ever more important than the other, the answer is no. Just because they have done something that benefit the entire society, he/she is ultimately no better, they are just as much vulnerable to death and emotions, and whatever else that makes us humans, as the rest of us.

Zealous-i think of a farmer as a zealous person because they are always on the field taking care of their crops and making sure that they produce food for their country.

The word vehement made me think about Barack Obama and his race for presidency. A characteristic that helps him in his campaign is that he is a young, emotional and passionate president, and that shows the public that he cares about this country.

the word adverse had multiple meanings, mostly related to having the negative affect towards someone or something and the minus sign came to mind with the word.

Subtle- A cloud of mist seemed to define one of the definitions for suble perfectly. faint, and mysterious.
