Letter to Elected Official, product from the Resource Management Project

The Resource Management project was one where we would get in groups with our fellow classmates or work alone and pick a resource in the natural world that is being consumed too quickly, or is too valuable that the world cannot just continue to consume at a certain pace. My resource was on Coal and it's mismanagement in American politics and the politics that effect the environment through the mismanagement. My goal was ultimately to raise awareness as with the Coal industry is a company that runs on the fundamental laws of supply and demand, raise awareness, lower demand, and ultimately reduce the size of the Coal market and its influence in American government. One product that was done was a letter sent to an elected official and in my case, was California state representative of the 51st district (San Diego) of Coal's dominating influence.

Dear Susan Davis,

I am writing this letter to voice my concern over our country's continued use of coal. It is becoming more and more evident that this country needs to move towards alternative, renewable resources not only to preserve the world's current environment, but also as to create the high-tech jobs that we need for the future. As climate change is becoming very much a threat to life on earth, it is even clearer that the coal industry must start leaving a smaller carbon footprint on the world. I believe that now is more than a perfect opportunity to see this happen. Although the California Renewable Portfolio Standards are in place,I wish to see a further refinement on the reduced use of the fossil fuels by implementing a bill that would slowly reduce the use of coal in San Diego, and possibly statewide as well. America today gets 50% of the total electricity supply from coal, and California, as seen as a leading state of the green movement, must continue to do so by creating more incentives to use less coal, not just using more alternative resources, to create an even greater positive impact in the environment.

Not only is America's dependence on coal a definite problem, the coal industry's immense influence along with the oil industry in American politics is severely limiting America's ability to transition to renewable energy sources, which is why I believe something must be done on the influence of the various industries in American politics. If America as a country is to continue to be the land of economic opportunity in the future as it has been in the past, I believe that America as a whole should adapt to the new era and once again become a country of innovation and creativity, through new laws that give incentives from America to go green starting with using less coal.

Sincerely,

Anthony Kang

Sociology Experiment

My Group consisted of my classmates Maryross, Minh, and myself, and our purpose was to do something out of the ordinary to see how people in public would react. The idea we came up with was that I would "collapse" in the open and see if people would bother looking by. We did this experiment two times, and the controlling factor was ultimately how I was lying down. We first did the experiment at the Fashion Vallley mall, with me lying down face down, and my arms placed like they fell in a freefall manner, and for about a good 20-30 seconds, no one bothered to look, we concluded that this was the downtime that people saw me go down on the floor and go about their business, after that though, one lady came up to me and kept nudging me to see if I was okay, and within 10 seconds of her arriving, a whole crowd was surrounding me to see if I was okay. The second time I did the experiment was with my head buried in my crossed arms, no one came after a minute.

Sociology Drug Project: Creative Essay "The Long Slow Death"

Benny awoke on the floor of his 1 bedroom apartment, 12 stories high looking down on downtown San Diego with a surprising calmness at 11:30. No struggle, no body aches, nothing. He looked out the window and the blinding afternoon sun pierced through his unadjusted eyes. He walked back blindly to his surprisingly large bathroom and turned on the cold water and stood there. Every second he stayed in felt like an eternity in a snowstorm, as he finally got focus of what he was doing he finished up and got out with the towel and dried himself off. He looked in the mirror and saw his reflection for a moment. He saw his own dark blue eyes look at his brown hair and his own face. He went outside and got dressed and grabbed his belongings and walked out. “Man, that party last night was crazy,” he thought to himself. He tried remembering everything he saw and did that night and remembered very well what happened. The colors, the shapes, the feeling that he could change himself to be whatever he wanted to be, it felt good. He walked down the street and made the left and crossed the trolley tracks and went down to seaport village and decided to treat himself to a seaside restaurant lunch. He ordered the house lobster and linguine noodles and was wolfing it down as soon as the first bite told his stomach that it was deprived of life’s only few good things in life. He was just finishing up the last bite of linguine when he got a phone call on his cell. “hullo?” was the sound that came out as he tried to answer the phone with food in his mouth. Jeff calls out, “Benny? It’s me Jeff, I found another party down in the warehouse off skyline drive, the one a few miles from the free way on the old air field, party's supposed to be HUGE, supposedly it's the biggest one you'll see in town.” Benny: “oh man, I’m just getting up from yesterday, I don’t know if I can handle it.” Jeff responded in surprise, “hey hey hey, don’t give me any of that downer bullshit, come on man, it’s gonna be even better than last night, dude I know for a fact that I had twice as much as you, and I'm like the weakest shit on earth. We're gonna have fun, it’s still only 2 in the afternoon, go home, watch some TV. get some sleep, rest up for tonight, I’ll come pick you up at 9 something-ish, no point in getting there on time anyway.” Benny thought about what he said for a moment, and asked in rhetorical hesitation, “uggh, are you serious?..” Jeff quietly replies “Dude, come on, you have tomorrow off to recover anyways, might as well make your weekend a weekend before you go back to that shit hole.” Benny instantly gave away his hesitation, “alright, alright, Ima get home right now, and I’ll see you then.” Benny put his cell back in his jacket and grabbed the change from the bill and quickly walked back to his apartment.

He got back to his apartment walked through the hall, turned off the kitchen light on the left that he left on and went to the couch in the center of the living room. He turned on the TV. and sat there for a good 20 minutes, watching through the most boring infomercials. “Saturday afternoon and nothing to watch. Jesus”. Benny sighed and soon fell asleep after complaining. He dreamed about nothing, a quiet, vegetative sleep that would get him the rest he needed for the party that would soon follow. “BRRRRRRRRING!” Benny awoke to his cell phone go off. He picks up and immediately and hears Jeff, “Benny you awake man? I’m on my way right now, so get up and get ready we’re gonna get ‘there’ tonight!”. Benny hung up and checked the time, “holy shit, I slept for 7 hours?!” the time read 9:10, he walked back and made a right from the kitchen and in to the bathroom, he quickly brushed his teeth and hair and put on some comfy, albeit slightly worn out jeans, and a t-shirt, not wanting to stand out at the party.

As soon as he finishes getting dressed the doorbell rings, “right on time” Benny grabbed his wallet and his clean blue jacket and locked the door behind him. Jeff met him outside, “dude, right on time, let's get goin yea?” Benny put on his jacket saying, “I was thinkin the same thing man, the same thing, let's go man.” Jeff ends up laughing at hearing Benny talking about being pumped for a party, “Hahaha, and this is coming from the guy that wanted to take the day off just this morning. Fucking I knew you'd change your mind.” Jeff instantly floored his slightly aged black 2 door mustang through the green lights and took the freeway to the east, heading to the party with full speed and full intent of going out of their minds. They raced through the freeway and were getting closer to the warehouse. “Ey Jeff, do you know how many people are goin? Or do you know any of ‘em?” Benny asked to get a feel for the people that was gonna be there. Jeff thought for a moment, “yeah, a few of my college buddies are gonna be there, but in terms of how many people are goin, i'm thinking 800 to maybe a little over a thousand people.” Benny almost jumped out of his seat, ”Holy shit, 1000 people? How big is this damn warehouse?” Jeff: “It's a fuckin’ airplane hangar, decked out to look like a club, that's what I heard, we're here dude, let's just see it for ourselves.” Benny and Jeff came up to the near abandoned warehouse by the old airfield and walked toward the entry way on the side where 2 inhuman sized bouncers stood in the way. “This place is invitation only.” The guard spoke with a calm, but powerful voice. “yea yea, I know, I got the invite, and here's the guest I brought.” Jeff showed the guard his cell phone and on the screen read a text message saying “ You and up to 3 other guests, (ladies are exempt from this rule) are invited to the wear and tear, house party, the biggest preview-underground party in San Diego of the year. Show this text message to gain entrance.” Jeff and Benny smoothly made an entrance, and as they entered couldn't believe their eyes. The warehouse was turned in to a giant strobe lit, club. Hundreds of people dancing, drinking, doing drugs from a-z, and the club was complete with multiple bars one on each end of the compass directions, lounges near each bars, and private rooms lined across the back of the warehouse from one end to the other. Jeff and Benny both stood in shock and amazement. “dude, I don't know where to start, to the bar!” Jeff grabbed Benny and went to the nearest on down the stairs from the entrance to the left side, Jeff figured it was a safe bet to start slow and see the place, while Benny went with his only friend in the club. As the night progressed, Benny and Jeff both became more relaxed and outgoing. Jeff met his college buddies, Benny got to know them, and got to meet a few decent looking women. Jeff found his close college friend, “Hey Matt, did you bring the Acid? I was curious to see if it's as good as you say it is.” Jeff asked in a soft drunk stupor as he gave effort to focus his eyes on Matt. He replied without even thinking, ”come on, the only decent party in SD and you'd think I wouldn't bring anything?” he smiled and pulled out a decent sized plastic bottle and in it with smaller vials filled with clear liquid. “Everyone, fork over 15 bucks, guys gotta at least break even for this stuff.” The girls were pulling out the money from their purses and Jeff and Benny gave their share, and as everyone took a vial, Matt handed Benny's and Jeff's back saying “Benny you're lucky you know Jeff, this one's on me, and Jeff this is even for sticking your neck up for me when I got caught.” Jeff and Benny smiled. Matt looked to everyone, “Aight, everyone, let the party finally begin!” The 7 people in the circle took their respective, almost invisible vials and drank the drop's worth of LSD. Benny put the vial back in his pocket and for a good while, he thought nothing was going on, and finally decided to ask Matt, “Hey Matt, how long does it take for it to kick in? Cause, I don't, feel any,...whooooa...”. The music that the rave was playing started to warp in to figures, and shapes, he could see each and every single part of the song as different colors and understand them. He slowly headed to the lounge area, bumping across people and sounds and colors along the way. Everything around him slowly started to merge together, like a giant pot of stew, and he was the person that was stirring it. He looked to his right and Jeff was in his own world as well.

He walked around, visualizing everything and trying to comprehend what was happening, but was a futile effort, his focus was on what seemed like everything and anything, he quickly sat down on the nearest lounge next to Jeff, and continued the mental circus show. He thought of a lot of things, random things. But for the most part it was about his entire life story that seemed to play back from the day of his birth. His father left him when he was 9, his mother took care of him until she gave up before junior year of high school started. He thought of how everything he's done was for survival, and led up to right now, his unrewarding job of being a office clerk, he hated his life and blamed his others for his problems, but as his trip on LSD and down memory lane continued, he saw everything else at a perceived standstill, and for a good 5 hours, he sat there, like a mesmerized doll, looking at everyone that was still standing, dancing, drinking, and partying the night away. He eventually got better where he could walk, but by that time the party was already over and everyone was gone. He looked on his cell phone and was sun struck by the the white light the 6:55 A.M. was flashing on his phone. “Uggggh” he felt a slight headache as he tried to wake up Jeff on the next set of lounges, passed out next to a random girl whom Benny could swear he never saw her the entire night with the group. “Jeff, wake up, it's 6:55, lets get out of here”, Benny pushed along his shoulder to get him to wake up. No motion. “Damn Jeff, wake the fuck up”. He still lied there motionless. “Holy fuck Jeff, it's not funny, wake UP!” Benny punches him on the arm and Jeff immediately jolts with a scream, “OW what the fuck?!” He looked up and saw it was just Benny, “Man, what do you want?” He spoke in the irritable voice of someone who was woken up too early. Benny replied “Wake up, it's almost 7, unlike you, I didn't fall asleep cause I saw a mental autobiography of my life last night.” Jeff laughed, “ahaha, holy shit, that's sick, anything in particular you remember?” “Yeah, I saw myself come out of my mother's womb, fuckin' scared the shit out of me, and I remember a lot of random shit from when I was a kid.” Jeff got up and walked with Benny toward the newly cracked open exit through the hangar doors and walked to his car and started driving home. The morning sun was definitely a nuisance to both of them as they were trying to recover and recollect themselves. “Dude, that party was awesome huh, we need to get more of that LSD next time, I dunno about you but I saw the rainbow hahaha!” Benny replied, “dude definitely, we need to do this again soon, work is gonna make my life hell until then” He continued to rub his head to get rid of the mild headache, and closed his eyes from the glaring orange sun as Jeff drove them home.

Government Everyday? YEAAH!

The question isn't whether you see government in day to day life, but where and when you see government role in society. In America, the very fact that you can Bush Bash (making fun of George W. Bush), burn flags, read books, have an opinion, is proof enough that government is an active part in our society. In a more artistic way, the very physical view you have of your surroundings, roads, bridges, people, the daily life that goes on around you, was made with the help of the government.

What Makes An American?

I believe that being an American, (from my skewed point of view) is ultimately one who sacrifices or has sacrificed something for this country, whether they served in the war, or came here for economic opportuniy and contributing to American society, I dont believe that a piece of paper or a card defines you as an American as I know plenty of people that do so much for this country but aren't "citizens" of this country.
